Fumone is located near Ferentino and it is an example of a Castle with two
functions. In the XI century it was a fortress and in the XII it became
a prison when it gave hospitality to Burdino, the antipope Gregorio VIII.
Callisto V defeated and captured him in Sutri and he was thus sent to prison.

Bonifacio
VIII captured and segregated the Pope Celestino V from 1295 to May 1296
in the same place after his "big refusal". Nowadays it is possible to visit
the prison cell where Celestino slept lying on the stones. This cell is
annvally transformed into a chapel on the occasion of the anniversary of
his death, and a funeral service is accordingly celebrated. Another part
of the Castle, with rooms painted in frescos and a beautiful garden, shows
the political and residential aspect of the Castle; from this part of the
building you can have a wonderful view of the Albani hills and of the Liri
valley; in the Medieval age its position was strategic because from the
Castle it was possible to control a huge territory and it was said: "Si
Fumo fumat, Campania tremat". This means that if something went wrong in
Fumone, the whole surrounding territory would be in danger. In italian its
name means "big smoke" because during the mediaeval age when there were
invasions, the nearby villages sent an alarm message using fires or smoke
signals, Fumone would see it and send on the message to Rome. The fortress
was given to the Castra family whose territories were under the authority
of the Church. In 1584 Giovanni Longhi , with the money that the Pope gave
generously to him, bought the old manor-house and began to restore it .
The Marquis Longhi restored the Castle and trasformed it into a splendid
and extremely well protected residence. The heirs completed the work with
a monumental garden just over the residence. The Longhi family is, still
today, the owner and the guardian of the fortress. |
