Il castello di Rocca Sinibalda

Rocca Sinibalda is a small resort in the province of Rieti. It lies on a hill which dominates the Valley of Turano. The most interesting monument in Rocca Sinibalda is its castle which Cardinal Alessandro Cesarini had built in the XVI century.
The property was subsequently owned by the Lante della Rovere and the Cesarini Sforza. The castle was designed in about 1530 by the Senese architect Baldassarre Peruzzi in a mediaeval style. After his death, work was continued by his son Sallustio and by Bartolomeo De Rocchi. It is perhaps to these last two architects that the castle owes its oves all appearance. The buiding was designed to have the shape of oa eagle with its wings out spread. This impressive, large building consists of a robost 'maschio' (a tall tower) and a residential palace, linked to a complex system of walls and towers. Inside the residential palace there are three main apartements and two courtyards. In the main hall the walls are decorated by frescoes from the sixteenth century which show views of Rocca Sinibalda and other castles in the area. In the past the castle has belonged to some notable families including the Sforza-Cesarini, the Mattei family and the Lante della Rovere family.
